The Midi Dress

Trends zigzag in and out of fashion, resurfacing every decade or so, refreshed ready for a new fashion audience – like the midi dress. Most recently, the midi dress became fashionable again in the Spring and Fall 2014 collections, having been last seen briefly with the 1990s slip dress. Going back even further into the history archives, this House of Holland dress reminds me of a contemporary version of the New Look era silhouette from Christian Dior in 1947, with its wide flaring midi skirt, sleeveless bodice and cinched-in waist. Henry Holland described his Fall 2015 Ready-to-Wear collection as “trustafarian street urchins”, and the complete opposite my interpretation of this dress.

This is what I love about fashion, we are all free to interpret the clothes we see on the runway, in magazines, in online stores or brick-and-mortar shops and reassemble into our own unique style. The structure of this dress, excess skirt fabric and wide flare silhouette, paired with black knee-high leather boots and black coat tick all my boxes for  a stylish autumn / winter look for day and night. In my wardrobe, the midi length is here to stay and hopefully my House of Holland dress will continue to give me wearing pleasure for years to come.

What is your favourite dress silhouette?
