I love how bright clothes and colour affect your mood and lift your spirit. Like this vibrant orange Diane von Furstenberg top that I bought in Hawaii on a stopover before heading to Greenville, South Carolina. Radiant and bound to brighten any melancholic mind. I wonder if the health benefits of wearing orange are the same as actually eating a real orange (all that vitamin C goodness) or smelling zesty orange essential oil with its antidepressant and anti inflammatory properties? Either way, I love this orange print top which I bought a few years ago in Hawaii. Whilst on my way to a friends wedding in South Carolina, I decided to stopover at Waikiki Beach for a few days to break up the long, arduous flight from Melbourne, Australia to Greenville, USA (via Dallas). Sunshine and glorious beaches for three days in August. This was a trip of firsts; my first time in Hawaii and my first Diane von Furstenberg purchase.
I remember the vibrant colours splashed all over Waikiki Beach from beach umbrellas and candy coloured inflatable tubes, to the long boards, and yellow and green outrigger canoes dotted along the shore. There was colour everywhere. Perhaps that’s why I was drawn to this top when I stepped into the cool, crisp exuberance of the Diane von Furstenberg store at the Ala Moana shopping centre. The bright beach culture and infectious Hawaiian lifestyle cast away any thoughts of the drab, grey Melbourne winter I had left behind. And wearing this top brings back happy travel memories of my brief but wonderful stay in Hawaii. I love the way that the clothes you buy in special places become special in themselves, snapshots of time; seared and locked forever in your happiness memory bank. Hawaii had such a friendly, laid-back culture and the kind of place I would visit again and again.
And since I have been wearing tonnes of black lately and feeling a little blue, I decided today was the perfect day to break out in a little colour for a lunch date with one of my girlfriends. Every time I wear this top, I am magically transported back to Hawaii, reliving the wonderful memories of August days spent exploring the island, lazing on Waikiki beach and dealing into island shopping life. Until the time comes when I can visit Hawaii again, at least I have this lovely orange print top to brighten my day and bring back happy, sunny, island life memories.
